- Deck Officers: They include the captain, chief officer, second officer, third officer and other junior officers.
- Engine Department: This consists of the chief engineer, radio officer, electrical officer and junior engineers.
- Service Department: This department manages the kitchen, laundry, medical and other services.
Education & Training: The minimum eligibility for course in marine science and nautical engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. The candidate should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 and no colour blindness.

The examination is followed by individual interviews/counsel, where the interviewers judge the degree of preparedness, and wakefulness of the outside atmosphere, in the candidates and their fitness for a profession in the Merchant Navy.The entry level for a fresh Marine Engineer (ME) is at the rank of fifth engineer or junior engineer and a marine Science graduate is as a Deck Cadet. Promotions depend on additional examination conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), the excellence of knowledge and individual advantage. On productively finishing these examinations the candidate receive the 'Certificates of fitness needed for encouragement to the particular program. This examination is conducted by the Ministry of exterior ship, in organization with the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) Mumbai, for determining the promotion prospects for the officers.
Direct Entry: Direct entry to Merchant Navy is also possible. Students who have completed their 10+2 with PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) are eligible to join as Deck Cadets and a student holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Electrical/Technology Engineering could also join the Merchant navy as a Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer. Direct entry Deck Cadets are required to undergo basic pre-sea training arranged by the recruiting company itself and the direct entry Engineering cadets are preferred to do a Pre-sea course of nine months duration in Marine Engineering conducted by the MERI.Personal Qualities:A merchant navy officer of any rank is required to be psychologically physically powerful and actually hard along with a honorable and modifiable attitude. You should have love for exploration and challenges and be able to work as well as study for examinations in between.As a merchant navy hopeful, you should hold headship, statement and team-working skills to keep complex systems running in extremes of temperature and weather, in the demanding schedules.Since you will be spending about half of the year on sea away from friends and family, you should not be sea sick and be patient and flexible enough to adjust in altogether a different life.
Promotion in merchant Navy: Ministry of Surface Transport, Government of India, takes care of the training needs and conducts competency exam through the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). Certificates of Competency' awarded by the DGS, is needed for promotion to the various respective classes. Work Environment:Ships are in operation continuously, and officers work shifts may vary according to the size of the ship. On a large vessel they may work four hours on duty followed by eight hours off duty. Working patterns vary between a few weeks and several months, depending on the type of ship and its trading patterns. Leave periods between voyages also vary but are normally generous to compensate for time spent away from home.
Salary: The first salary varies between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 a month. A person gets a selection of profit such as free food, housing, paid leave, two-way free passageway and facilities for families. The perquisite include extra, celebration travel and other annual benefits. Foreign company pay higher, and a starting salary of $1,500 to $3,500 can be expected.
